Helpful Tips and tactics

  • Netting Halibut

We all love to catch halibut. Please do your part to ensure that we can continue to catch these wonderful fish in the future. We strongly encourage all Derby participants have a rubber coated knotless landing net onboard to prevent tail splitting on fish that will be released. Smaller legal fish and certainly sub-legal fish will not help you win this tournament. Please do your part to release them in good health and do not use nylon nets.

  • Gaffing Halibut

A gaff is hands down the best tool to land a large, clearly legal halibut. Netting these big fish can be tricky, as often times they will evade and elude even the best attempts to land them. A well placed shot stuns the fish cold and they rarely move after being gaffed. Take care not to remove them from the gaff until they have been dispatched as they can create havoc on deck. Letting a flopping halibut loose on your deck can lead to a painfully lodged hook in yourself or one of your crewmembers.

  • Birds. Bait. Predators.

Halibut live on the bottom and don’t really register on our fish-finders all the time. Good anglers will look for signatures they can see that point to where predators might be concentrating. Birds like baitfish, and so do halibut. Look for the birds in areas over sand, mark large schools of baitfish on your screen…the big predators we’re after won’t be far behind.

  • Tactics

Whether you choose to drift, motor mooch, or bounce ball. Whether you choose to fish live bait, dead bait, or plastics. If you choose to fish locally, on the move, or run far away to a spot with less pressure. All of your decisions and fishing tactics will play a part in your success, and your shot at taking home the cold hard cash.

  • Tides

Halibut can be very reactive to tidal change and swell direction. Bites can frequently heat up just before and after a high or low tide. Be prepared to be fishing during these periods. It is a poor tactical error to be changing locations or fishing for bait during these tide changes. Examine the tides charts and plan your day accordingly.

  • Strategy and Preparation

Strategy plays a part in all fishing tournaments. Remember that you have limited time, but your strategic creativity is limitless. Preparation is an advantage that all fisherman can exploit, but often times do not. Have a plan, but don’t be so dedicated to it that you don’t read the signs your environment is showing you.
